What is Matter? Buying smart home devices that work with everything

If you’ve shopped for smart plugs, bulbs or locks lately, you’ve probably seen a small Matter logo on the box. It’s the most useful thing to look for in a smart home device right now.

What Matter is

Matter is a common language for smart home devices, backed by Amazon, Google, Apple, Samsung and many others. A Matter-certified device can be set up in Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or SmartThings – and can even be shared between them, so one person uses Siri and another uses Alexa for the same lights.

What Thread is

Many Matter devices talk over Thread, a low-power wireless network where devices pass messages along to each other. That makes battery devices like sensors and locks last longer and respond quickly. Thread needs a “border router” – recent Echo, Nest Hub, Apple TV and HomePod models often have one built in.

Before you buy

  • Look for the Matter logo on the box, not just “works with Alexa” or “works with Google”
  • Check that you have a Matter controller (a recent smart speaker, display, Apple TV or hub) – most homes with one already do
  • Keep the setup code (a QR code on the device or in the box) – you’ll need it if you ever reset the device
  • Older non-Matter devices still work in their own apps; you don’t have to replace everything at once

Matter is still maturing, so not every feature of every device is available through it yet. For basics like lights, plugs, locks, sensors and thermostats it works well.
